Teaching Philosophy of Practice in Tertiary Counselling Courses: Challenges and Ways Forward

Although effective counsellors can present a philosophy of practice to their clients, students that graduate from contemporary counselling courses often find it difficult to articulate a singular philosophy that underlies their counselling. In this presentation, Tristan Snell, Sophie Lea, and Kim Storey, who collectively have decades of experience leading, developing, and teaching counselling courses in Australia, Hong Kong, and Singapore, will discuss the difficulties and opportunities relating to effective teaching of philosophy of practice in tertiary counselling courses. Some of the issues discussed in this presentation will include: 

- Evidence for the importance of philosophy of practice. 
- Tensions between, theory, research and practical implementation. 
- Ensuring effective links between teaching and practicum. 
- Opportunities for effective teaching. 
- Effective assessment tasks that tap into philosophy of practice as a learning outcome. 

 PRESENTERS:

Dr Tristan Snell BSocSci(Psych), BAppSci(Psych)(Hons), MPsych(Couns)/PhD, MAPS.
Tristan has been a lecturer and course leader in counselling for several years at Monash and Deakin University. He is an experienced Counselling Psychologist with practical experience working in private practice, employment services, psychiatric rehabilitation, university counselling, and school settings. He has published a number of articles on course design and counsellor education, and is currently undertaking a long-term research study on counsellor pathways to employment.

Sophie Lea is a professional counsellor, educator, clinical supervisor and consultant with over 18 years’ experience working in various therapy/educational settings both in Australia and overseas. She is currently a lecturer and a Professional Practice Consultant for the Master of Counselling and a PhD Candidate at Monash University.  Sophie also works in private practice and is a board member of Kind Schools Australia and an advisory board member for Resilient Youth Australia. She presents workshops for healthcare professionals working in schools, community services fields and industry in the areas of therapeutic space design, supporting and working with vulnerable youth populations and engaging adolescent patients in medical environments.

Kim Storey is a Masters’ qualified professional counsellor and clinical supervisor with over ten years’ experience working in the community sector in clinical and managerial roles. With specialist training in family violence, and family and couples’ therapy, she has worked extensively within Family Services and Family Violence Services, including Men’s Behaviour Change and Community Corrections programs. Kim is currently a Professional Practice Consultant and a lecturer for the Master of Counselling at Monash University. She also works in private practice and provides consultancy to community organisations working with families impacted by family violence.
