As a way of contextualising the psychosocial toll of Covid 19 in 2020, I have deferred to Janoff-Bulman’s 1992 shattered assumptions theory where she refers to the myriad consequences of trauma. In my work over the preceding six months (as a therapist, lecturer and supervisor) I have become increasingly aware of a persistent and ever-present sense of loss. The micro and macro losses of the past months have taken a huge toll on everyone and have, in my experience, left us feeling, certainly by August, and definitely, by September, as we usually feel in November – emotionally exhausted, war weary and yet hopeful – hopeful that we can steel ourselves for a little longer as we stumble through to a break at Christmas time.
This webinar will review some of the concepts associated with shattered assumption theory, and consider strategies to manage the current Covid affected life we are living.

Susan’s experience and knowledge in the area of loss and trauma began 40 years ago as a Registered Nurse and has continued throughout her 25 year career as a counsellor. She is an Accredited Supervisor with PACFA. Susan is the Director of LifeCare Consultancy. The practice offers counselling, clinical and student placement supervision, Children’s Supervised Contact Services, training and forensic report writing for the Federal Circuit and Family Court. Susan combines her clinical work with teaching counselling related courses at the University of Southern Queensland. She is a regular guest on Channel 9’s A Current Affair.
