About me

My practice
Hi there,

I'm James, a mental health clinician, Registered Music Therapist and Registered Clinical Counsellor living, working and playing on Ngunnawal country in Canberra.

I hold clinical roles in public mental health services and provide clinical supervision to staff and students.

My background is in music therapy, however my experience gained while working in public mental health settings has broadened my therapeutic approach. I am fascinated by the intersections of verbal counselling and psychotherapy modalities alongside music therapy techniques.

My work revolves around narrative and schema driven approaches to therapeutic songwriting, emotion-focused lenses for song discussion, cognitive-behavioural uses of playlists for mood management and trauma-informed psychodynamic clinical improvisation.

I practice from an eclectic mix of humanistic, psychodynamic, ecological, behavioural and transdiagnostic frameworks and believe in the power and primacy of the therapeutic relationship in therapy, working with core processes and mechanisms that can catalyse change and create positive impact in people's lives.

I am currently focusing on public health settings across adult and adolescent mental health and do not offer private counselling services at this point.
