Anticipatory and Non-Finite Grief

Working with clients who are living into loss
Facilitator: Dr Greg Roberts

ONLINE via zoom across 4 half-days Thur 5 & Fri 6 and Thur 19 & Fri 20 NOVEMBER 2020

This existentially-informed workshop may be taken as stand-alone CPD or as part of an accreditation pathway*

Anticipatory grief is a term often used in relation to end of life or the diagnosis of a life limiting illness. There are many questions about what the term anticipatory grief actually means from a lived experience perspective. From an existential perspective it can be useful to consider that once we face the reality of our own death or a significant change to how our lives will be, then we experience grief in relation to becoming aware of our mortality in a tangible way. Grief is present whenever we experience an ending or change in our lives.

Applying an existential focus, this workshop will blend grief, loss and bereavement theories to engage you in an experiential learning process in relation to working effectively and deeply with clients who are facing death or living with the changes of permanent disability.

During the workshop you will be invited to consider:

  • Contemporary theories of anticipatory grief and non-finite loss
  • Becoming ‘death aware’ when working with clients with a life-limiting illness
  • Working with clients who are experiencing the grief that relates to living with permanent incapacity
  • Working with clients who are caring for someone experiencing these changes

You will leave this  workshop with:

  • Embodied and practical ways to support people who are facing death or disability and their carers
  • A deeper understanding of the difference between death awareness and death focus
  • Greater confidence in your ability to build your own approach to ’being with’ the reality of death and disability
