Boundaries and Record Keeping

Over the time of running webinars about ethical practice two areas have repeatedly appeared as questions and issues that practitioners are concerned about. It is for this reason that we are focussing on these topics in this webinar.
Firstly, Boundaries - maintaining professional boundaries is integral to the and professional practice of therapy. It is also critical to the development of the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist. The issue of establishing and maintaining boundaries is fraught with complexities and ambiguities that require therapists to make judgement calls and apply the code of ethics to specific situations. Keeping clear boundaries underpins many principles of the Code of Ethics, not just for counsellors and psychotherapists, but also for psychologists and social workers and other mental health professionals. Making the appropriate judgement call, whilst balancing the other imperatives, is often challenging for therapists.
Why Record Keeping? While we accept that most agencies have their own ways of creating, updating and storing records and case notes and, while there is no one ‘right’ way to do this, we will consider some issues to be aware of when making case notes and with record keeping with attention to ethical and legislative perspectives.
This webinar will explore the intricacies of boundary settings in therapy, the potential for therapists to feel out of their depth in certain situations, the correlation of record keeping to maintaining ethical boundaries and the importance of reflection and supervision to ethical and safe practice.

Crystal Lockard has worked in the health and welfare sector for more than 25 years and specifically in private practice since 1999, with extensive experience in family and relationship counselling. Other areas in which she has provided counselling include general mental health issues, substance abuse and chronic and life threatening health conditions.
Crystal has been a trainer and educator in the mental health and welfare sector and a clinical supervisor for more than 15 years. She has been a past coordinator of the Mental Health Professionals (Northern Sydney) Network, and a past board member of the Counsellors and Psychotherapy Association of NSW and the Cancer Counselling Professionals. She is currently a member of the PACFA Ethics Committee.
Maxine Rosenfield is self -employed and contracted to provide training and supervision for organisations in the community sector as well as working as a counsellor and clinical supervisor from two practices on Sydney’s Northern beaches, where she work's face to face, by phone and by Zoom or Skype.
She teaches online as well as on campus for courses including: students of the Bachelors courses in Counselling and Social Work at the Australian College of Applied Psychology. She also supervise's undergraduate students on their clinical placements. Additionally she provides tutorials and supervision for Bachelors and Masters of Counselling and Psychotherapy placement students at Western Sydney University and teaches international students studying Bachelors of Community Services at Stotts College.
Apart from sitting on the PACFA Ethics Committee, she is a Board of the Australasian Association of Supervision and am a co-founder and former Board member of Cancer Counselling Professionals Inc.
